Arbiters of Style

wolfe1 Arbiters of Style The Museum at FIT has opened “Arbiters of Style, Women on the Forefront of Fashion” from May 21 to November 8, 2008. The installation takes you on a tour of the role that women or referred to as “tastemakers” comprised of designers, socialites, editors, and prominent fashion executives have personified fashion’s evolution. Through their own personal style, these women have the ability to translate and influence trends to the widest audience. From Chanel’s signature cardigan suit, Claire McCardell’s introduction of American sportswear, Bonnie Cashin eclectic mix of global influences to Diane Von Furstenburg’s and Donna Karan’s sexy and modern working women’s sensibility to the exaggerated silhouettes from Norma Kamali, Rei Kawakubo, and Vivienne Westwood all describe the significant moments that have moved fashion forward. The exhibition continues to highlight the collaboration between the designer and their muse. The designer’s vision isn’t created in a vacuum; their sensibility is evolved from either observation or relationships. The photographs included in the installation by Louise Dahl-Wolfe, inspired me to post this image from her book published by Abrams Books. Dahl-Wolfe’s work from the 1930′s to the 60′s is known for creating a new American lifestyle, relaxed and accessible while exotic. She crafted an “environmental” style using natural light and on location. Looking at the photographs again, you can see the references used in recent editorials and campaigns.
