I’ve just joined a great Meetup Figure Drawing group run by Michael Newberry in trendy Williamsburg, Brooklyn. For every artist, drawing from a live model in a series of quick gestures to longer sittings is essential exercising your observation muscle. Especially to express fashion, keeping lines fresh and spontaneous creates a natural shorthand describing the model without overworking. I bring this attitude while sketching using digital media to reinforce my natural line quality.

While drawing, I focus using my entire arm to capture gestural model movements communicating the figure’s pose. I look for the body’s inner rhythm and balance drawing the inside and outside the figure. Looking for the bigger shapes before to narrow the detail allows to absorb the entire pose without tightening the line. This practice keeps me fresh while illustrating without the luxury of a model.
Posted are a few examples from the last session using charcoal on newsprint.
