Zack Carr – Brevity of Line

07.03.08 | Comment?

The late designer Zack Carr defined American fashion from the ’70s to the millennium as Creative Director for Calvin Klein. In Zack’s memory, his brother George, assembled an incredible book documenting Zack’s inspiration from his myriad of sketchbooks. The genius behind the work, was the brevity of line. Looking through his drawings and references, the refined minimal style that became Calvin Klein was created from Carr’s beautiful simple strokes. My friend, Michael Berkowitz had the opportunity to work with Carr and would always describe his drawings. The beauty of the illustrations begin with the strict editing and the emphasis on shape. Fashion begins with silhouette and Zack’s drawing tell the complete story without the necessity to include superfluous detail. Design and figure are all clearly expressed by line weight and shadow. These examples are perfect to demonstrate the importance of the designer’s sketch to emphasize silhouette and clearly showing the body’s movement.
