I’ve been listening to Great Lake Swimmers since 2003 beginning with their self-titled debut album and last Friday we (Chris and I) caught the band’s preview tour for their new upcoming album at Brooklyn’s newest venue The Bell House (pictured below). Lead vocalist/songwriter Tony Dekker is Canada’s Indie troubadour producing delicate melodies that been compared to Neil Young and Nick Drake. The rustic Bell House, on Brooklyn’s Gowanus canal, mirrored Dekker’s transcendent style creating the intimate show. The set featured many songs from their last album “Ongiara” named after the boat that ferried the band to the recording studio on Toronto Island. That album similar to the newer songs began to break away from the earlier lo-fi folk instead using multilayer instrumentals introducing a folk-pop style. Still, much of the show was devoted to Dekker’s solo shimmering acoustics.
