Creative collage artist, and my sister!, has introduced these unique textural compositions celebrating Spring. Rich in material and technique, you can follow Susan’s blog: Building Beauty Layer by Layer to learn more about her process and inspiration.
Small Earth for Spring
I loved making these tiny Small Earth collages. Each is just 3″ x 3″. Packed into that small space are bits of mica, screen printing, metallic paint, and more. The museum matting and whitewashed frames help the little details pop out. These would look great as a pair. One frame has little square accents and the other doesn’t… but that helps keep things pleasantly off balance, don’t you think?
About Susan Gertz
My formal education is as a biologist, with an emphasis in evolutionary ecology. One of my most vivid life experiences was learning at age 12 that the atoms within our bodies have been recycled for eons from stardust, dinosaurs, everything, and will continue to do so for untold time after we die. I was drawn to science, especially evolutionary biology, out of a deep sense of kinship and respect for all the life with which we share our planet—especially life that is tiny, slow, slimy, or strange. A strong connection with my Jewish heritage also speaks to my sense of a sacred Earth, or “admat kodesh,” meaning holy ground in Hebrew. My artwork emerges from these experiences and feelings.
