I caught singer songwriter Max Vernon last week at NYC’s lower east side Rockwood Music Hall. Maybe it was his silver lamé leggings with his tailored blazer that gave his sound a distinctive voice, but Vernon has coined his own version of “smart pop”. According to his MySpace page his influences include: “carnivals, dusty honky tonk pianos, vintage pornography, michel foucault, and booze. Oh, and these people: Joni Mitchell, Mamas and the Papas, Laura Nyro, Beethoven, Gershwin, Nellie Lutcher, Sarah Vaughan, Stevie Wonder, Sonic Youth, Elliott Smith, Jelly Roll Morton”. After a great set of ballads and observation, Max shared his CD “Manic Impression” all with a personal hand written label. Talk about viral marketing! Here’s a few tracks:
