It was touch and go last night between the taunting rain and the sold-out crowd waiting to access the roof of Parkslope’s Old American Can Factory for ROOFTOP FILMS premiere of 45365. The drops held off enough for opening band Like Bells to perform their set. One of those moments when you immediately connect with the work, the ‘Like Bells’ ambient melodies suited perfectly the outdoor skyline venue. The Oberlin Conservatory of Music (Oberlin, Ohio) trio, Will Mason, Garett Openshaw and Gabe Baker formed the group in 2006 while students at Oberlin College. I thought this write-up from The Pop Stereo succinctly describes the sound:
“Predominantly instrumental, this trio of Oberlin College / Conservatory students don’t shy away from a catchy melody and songs of pop-song length…utilizing their instruments to their fullest (violin /viola, guitar, drums, cpu) to create songs and arrangements that are both beautifully complex and accessible.”
