Paris begins the final strut of the Spring 2010 collections this week, and these creative designs from the global fashion capitals began with a sketch. As fabrics are selected, details studied, and silhouettes draped, the designer’s sketch evokes the mood of the season. These examples from Calvin Klein’s Spring 2010 collection, designed by Creative Director Francisco Costa, collaborated with Parsons School of Design fashion illustration professor Richard Rosenfeld to capture the label’s look.

The result is a new minimalistic contemporary attitude, almost “non” fashion but drawing inspiration from natural life. Costa, known for his geometry, experiments with volume while manipulating fabrics into unusual textures.
Rosenfeld attended the final fittings of the Spring 2010 collection and sketched the sessions as Costa would continue to mold the styles. Keeping the model from fashion exaggerated “poses” the designs are illustrated as the fabrics fall naturally on the body. Rosenfeld’s line quality dynamically and simply expresses the shapes.
The design sketch captures the art, in contrast to photography, with just a few lines, can give the suggestion.
