The Hidden Cameras
Origin: Orphan (Arts & Crafts)I first came across the band The Hidden Cameras from the amazingly controversial art film, Shortbus, by John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) with their harmonious pop song Boys of Melody. Since then, I’ve been addicted to the “mild-mannered army” of musicians led by creator and front man Canadian Joel Gibb. Artistically directing the band’s evolution from writing, performing, and producing original album art, has become Gibb’s ultimate creative project. I happened to catch the late show at Brooklyn’s Union Hall last night and got swept up in the revival concert atmosphere. Promoting their new album, Origin: Orphan (Arts & Crafts), the show opened with a Wagner-esque single note and the band coming on stage wearing mini monk robes. Gibb, now living in Berlin, experimenting with German classical music transposed the sound into the band’s signature. Quickly, the show captured the exuberance found on the recordings with impressive musicians and an excited party atmosphere on and off stage. Here are some pics photographed by Nick Happens on Flickr from the Union Hall show.
