A Barneys ad by Jean-Philippe Delhomme
With a recommendation by my friend Steven Broadway, I attended a conversation by satorist and illustrator Jean-Philippe Delhomme at Parsons School of Design. The evening, hosted by the Illustration Department, invited Delhomme to share his colorful insights as writer/illustrator contributing to the art, design and fashion world.
Delhomme is most notably known to the American fashion scene by his unconventional advertisements for Barneys that led to editorials and a series of illustrated books. On the surface, abstract gestural use of paint (gouache), to depict the characters makes the impression, but the staging, setting the scene is signature in Delhomme’s work. From the presentation, Jean-Philippe discussed his art school influences. And as he shared a photograph of a fashion model standing in the activity of making fashion, you can immediately understand that Delhomme is equally engaged in the subject while making his commentary featuring the local color.
His new book The Cultivated Life, is a witty collection of pictorial essays describing scenes familiar in design and art, but show the self deprecating humor. Delhomme reminds us how much we love the pursuit of the perfect aesthetic, but the absorption provides a lot of fun upon reflection.
Delhomme also curates and illustrates a blog, The Unknown Hipster, journaling the musings of a bearded fashionista and his fashionable encounters in New York City.
