Artist Maria Gil Ulldemoins uses textiles and fashion to convey her exploration as she studies human life. As reported on the blog earlier, I’m fascinated to discover so many visual artists evolve the tradition of garment making beyond the confines of commercial purpose. The wonderful example posted above is entitled Man, I feel like a women.. using cross stitch to represent stereotypes, archetypes, expectations, duties, labour, resilience, and beauty.
And, on the heels of NY Fashion Week, New York Times Cathy Horyn, posted an important back story discussing the Garment Center’s elephant in the room. As designers are preparing to show their collections under the tents, actually producing them in the NYC’s historic district has become increasingly impossible.
