I recently got to know the talented and funny fashion illustrator, artist and educator Julie Johnson. Thanks to social networking, we met via Flickr, both sharing our work. I later discovered that Julie’s fabulous gestural style, posted to the left, was the art to some of my favorite Bloomingdale’s newspaper ads. I actually used them in the classroom as terrific examples of emphasizing silhouette for my students.
After speaking on the phone, I later learned that Julie began her career in NYC and encouraged to start illustrating professionally by WWD icon Steven Stipelman and celebrity photographer Steven Meisel as her teachers at Parsons in the early ’80s.
Read more about Julie from my Examiner.com article and her recent move to Iowa City from San Francisco creating an idyllic art studio in a refurbished brick schoolhouse. And stay connected with Julie’s work viewing her beautiful illustration blog, The Spirit of Drawing!
