Eric William Carroll: Atari Sunset – 6’8″ x 9, silkscreened chromogenic prints, 2007
The beautiful weather we’re experiencing in NYC not only is perfect for gallery hopping, but is also the subject of the Sunburn series by Eric William Carroll. Currently on display at Michael Mazzeo Gallery in NYC and viewable from Carroll’s site, Sunburn is a collection of the artist’s found salvaged photographs of traditional cliché sunset landscapes. Carroll bleaches, scratches or defaces the images to authenticate the subject.
In the posted example from the show entitled Atari Sunset, Carroll explores the transition using digital photography enhancing reality or erasing imperfections. Recreating his own landscape from 700 photographs, Carroll silkscreens a checkerboard pattern to replicate the pixelated process found in the digital universe. I also love the ‘Albers’esque color study effect too.

Absolutely love these pieces, truly the way we see things after our immersion into the digital world.Pointilism was the beginning of this visionary concept.
