7Eleven Gallery Make yourself At Home

After this week’s big chill in NYC, yesterday was a harbinger of Spring and I was heading over to the Highline in the gallery district. Thursday evenings usually signal art openings in Chelsea’s converted gallery warehouse spaces and the 7Eleven Gallery brought their group exhibition street level. The show Make Yourself At Home, is installed in a temporary space at 169 Tenth Avenue and will run until June 6, 2010.

The artists transformed the industrial setting into a multi room house re-imaging everyday objects. Viewers are encouraged to ‘stretch out’ and ‘make themselves at home’ with the re-considered objet d’art. Favorites of mine were the wallpaper designs repeating either insect or helicopter motifs and the Dialogues with Marcel Duchamp paperback used as a bookshelf. Also inviting was the robotic doll musing the meaning of art reclining on the red and white gingham blanket making me consider to break a baguette with him.
