As the fashion mayhem begins today known as New York Fashion Week, now at its new venue, Lincoln Center, emotions run high on the runway and especially backstage.

In the new fashion doc “L’Amour Fou” by director Pierre Thoretton explores the 50 year partnership between legendary designer YSL and business icon Pierre Bergé.

A designer’s temperament for creativity doesn’t always translate to accounting and many famous label’s success is credited to the synergy of vision and finance. Director Thoretton, son-in-law of Catherine Deneuve, a YSL muse, maintained a friendship with Bergé beginning the project focusing on their homes, lifestyle, and coveted art collection but the couple’s 50 year relationship of unconditional love became the film’s focus.

After Laurent’s dismissal from Dior presenting the rock n’ roll collection that embodied fashion’s future but not the establishment taste, YSL and Bergé founded their couture house. Inspired by contemporary culture YSL was the first to identify pret-a-porter under the Rive Gauche label. Forever changing the style or attitude of dressing for women, YSL followers quickly adopted his trousers and sportswear influencing 20th century design.

“L’Amour Fou,” will receive its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival this Saturday.
