March is brightening up in NYC and the Armory Arts Week fairs on the city’s pier locales provide the backdrop. The light drenched Independent Art Fair in Chelsea reflected the artist’s interest in materials, experimenting with observation of everyday possessions. Helen Appel’s textile still-life contrasts cloth painted on natural burlap canvas following the subtle movement, Liam Gillick suggests a portrait with boxed clothing objects, and Meredyth Sparks and Alicija Kwade pattern piece deconstuction evoke a mood of cubist collage.
A few blocks away, Moving Image at The Waterfront Tunnel across from Fountain Art Fair turns the focus exclusively on video art. Jim Campell’s
View, 2010 made from 1152 LEDs explores low- resolution imagery and its relationship to visual perception. Campell recently installed a similar version last year in Madison Square Park of his illuminated shadowy animated figures. And the street art inspired entrance of Fountain at Maritime in Hudson River Park displays the creative “happening” cruise on their art festival ship.
