Who doesn’t love a band line-up that begins at noon? CMJ, a 5 day 24/7 music marathon, occupied venues all over Manhattan and Brooklyn showcasing global new talent last week. Saturday, the final day of the festival, my audiophile friend Nancy and I caught the Aussie BBQ, a showcase sponsored by Sounds Australia at The Delancey. Promoting 20 native bands, the Australian artists were injected throughout the revolving week long schedule.

The bohemian barefoot glam rockers, WIM, were a standout. Taking to the stage with a West Coast ease, WIM’s set began with a psychedelic slow build up with a theatrical tribal drumming finish. Evoking a Morrison mood, the melodic organ infused tracks smoothly transitioned between songs with their esoteric vocals and instrumentals.

Another favorite, singer songwriter Sam ‘Guineafowl‘ Yeldman and band brought their sleek polished pop tunes to the early afternoon rock show. With energetic good looks, the memorable hand clapping melodies were a great ambassador for the Southern Hemisphere.

Remixing was the theme at the WNYC live broadcast of Soundcheck from the Re:Mix Lab, a pop-up art and technology gallery in Chelsea Market. Sponsored by Hyundai, there were plenty of their remixed hatchbacks with slick portable DJ turntables and gaming consoles for a mobile party.

The Soundcheck live broadcast continued the theme with music technologists demonstrating music mixing creation with online apps and gaming systems. DJ Spooky brought his free iPad app and performed a new project “Terra Nova: Sinfonia Antarctica.” The chilly introspective arrangement is part of DJ Spooky’s multimedia platform inspired by a trip to Antarctica captured in his study “The Book of Ice.”

Uptempo rhythms begins the CMJ Music Marathon today through Sunday in NYC. The music venues are headlining bands 24/7 from the early afternoon to the early morning hours. Indie band, Jonquil, caught my attention from WNYC’s Gig Alert report. Take a Listen to one of Jonquil’s melodies “I Know I Don’t Know” from their album One Hundred Suns.

Collage, a favorite art form of mine, invites creative play forming an assemblage from everyday objects. Maybe growing up in a family of collagists watching my mother and sister craft their own papered compositions heightened my sensitivity.

Today, I was introduced to Janice McDonald, a graphic designer who has focused her talent towards collage. McDonald’s vibrant experiments of overlooked fragments re-mixes the recycled imagery into very striking deconstructions.

The Brooklyn music scene promoted by L Magazine’s Northside Festival last weekend kicked started weekend brunch with bands all over Williamsburg. Chris and I hung out with our shoe designer friend Nancy of Butter Shoes at the converted garage Bar Matchless.

Restaurant, bar and music venue, the open air space let in the gorgeous afternoon light while keeping the stage dark for the Battering Room Northside Showcase. Check out the iPhone clips of Beat Radio, Mussels, and Diehard.

For those of us who sometimes find the ability to chew gum and walk at the same time a challenge you’ll totally be enthralled by Stupormarket the new dance theater work by The Seldoms, a Chicago-based contemporary dance company, who simultaneously dance, chew gum, and blow bubbles all in stride.

Stupormarket, directed and choreographed by The Seldoms’ Artistic Director Carrie Hanson in collaboration with the company, is a thought provoking and often whimsical allegory of our economic blowout and ongoing wobbly recovery. It is also a fully energized multi-media 60-minute display of creative athletic contemporary dance and artistic wit. Ever dream of life as it is erupting into dance? Those attending the DUMBO 1st Thursday Gallery Walk on June 2nd experienced this phenomenon first hand as part of the Artichoke Dance Company’s performance of PUBLIC under the soaring Manhattan Bridge Arch. The interactive and often athletic 40-minute dance work performed at dusk in and around a crowd of spectators transformed the lofty architectural Brooklyn landmark into an intimate stage for contemporary dance.

DUMBO’s evening of art and performance underscored the importance of public art and arts events within our creative community. Artichoke Dance Company’s free performance of PUBLIC free was presented by the Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC) and the DUMBO Improvement District and was made possible, in part, by support from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The NYC based Artichoke Dance Company, founded in 1995 and directed by Lynn Neuman, creates unique dance works, presents public performances and offers participatory educational experiences in dance and dance making. Artist, owner and fashion designer, Elaine Pedlar is ‘pretty smart’ drawing from a career in fashion design to craft her new collection of couture paper dolls. Pedlar’s newly opened pop-up boutique, Dumbelle, in the art and technology Brooklyn district in Dumbo welcomed new and repeat collectors.

With her love of illustration, the class of 87 Parsons grad traded fabrics for paper and created the Dumbelle world with 3 characters. Either sold already dressed and colored printed as cards and prints, Pedlar also offers the line art sheets ready to imagine your own color story and looks.
