*Sparked is excited to launch a premiere collection of art letterpress cards featuring the musings of international award winning artist and illustrator Igor Kopelnitsky.

Igor’s whimsical style satirizes societal themes both political and global and can be seen in the pages of many national and international publications such as the Op-Ed pages of The New York Times, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Nation, Courrier International, and La Repubblica. The Kiev born artist had originally studied physics at the University of Novosibirsk; but upon the publication of his first cartoon Igor discarded physics in favor of cartooning and illustration. Look for Kopelnitsky’s illustrations in “All the Art That’s Fit to Print (And Some That Wasn’t): Inside The New York Times Op-Ed Page” by Jerelle Kraus published by University Press, 2009. Click here to view more of Igor’s work.

Debut Card Set Available January 2009

Each design is a unique and amusing commentary on issues ranging from energy independence to the evolution debate with themes and titles including “Play Date With The Devil”, “Bright Idea”, “Heavy Thoughts”, “Don’t Be Shy”, “Balancing Act”, “Peace Out”, “Drill Baby Drill”, and “So Evolved”.

Even though we may be experiencing a shopper’s hangover, design will always be apart of our culture. I wonder how many camels this cost during Christ’s time.
JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli archeologists have discovered a 2,000-year-old gold earring beneath a parking lot next to the walls of Jerusalem’s old city, the Israel Antiquities Authority said Monday.

The discovery dates back to the time of Christ, during the Roman period, said Doron Ben-Ami, director of excavation at the site. The piece was found in a Byzantine structure built several centuries after the jeweled earring was made, showing it was likely passed down through generations, he said. The find is luxurious: A large pearl inlaid in gold with two drop pieces, each with an emerald and pearl set in gold.

“It must have belonged to someone of the elite in Jerusalem,” Ben-Ami said. “Such a precious item, it couldn’t be one of just ordinary people.”

In a statement released Monday, the authority said the piece of jewelry was “astonishingly well-preserved.” Finds from the Roman period are rare in Jerusalem, Ben-Ami said, because the city was destroyed by the Roman Empire in the first century A.D.

Shimon Gibson, an American archaeologist who was not involved in the dig, said the find was truly amazing, less because of its Roman origins than for its precious nature.

“Jewelry is hardly preserved in archaeological context in Jerusalem,” he said, because precious metals were often sold or melted down during the many historic takeovers of the city.

“It adds to the visual history of Jerusalem,” Gibson added, saying it brings attention to the life of women in antiquity.

Though Gibson dates the piece slightly later than the antiquities authority, to sometime between the second and fourth centuries A.D., he said its quality and beauty were impressive.

Ben-Ami added that he expects more small, luxury items to turn up in future excavations.

Earrings similar to this one have been found at archaeological sites throughout Europe, Ben-Ami said, where the Roman Empire also flourished. The authority said the earring appeared to be crafted using a technique similar to that depicted in portraits from Roman-era Egypt.

Although, on the other side of the globe, H&M debut their Comme des Garçons collection to 2,000 eager shoppers in Japan’s fashionable Ginza district as reported by WWD. To celebrate the new Harajuku store, H&M built upon CdG’s cult status in Japan and created the limited edition collection. With significantly higher price points, Japan’s 20 somethings were eager to own the boiled wool pea coats, harem pants and polka dot cardigans. Global launch kicks off this coming Thursday!

Fashion and style has enjoyed the spotlight this political season from high priced coiffure’s, traveling pantsuits, cleavage and shopping sprees. And as our new administration battle terrorists, solves the financial crisis, provide universal healthcare, establishes energy independence, and bring a jobless America back to work, the blogosphere was lit up with commentary about Michelle Obama’s “Victory” election night dress. I like bold choices in policy and taste but that sometimes comes with a fan fair of criticism. Although, our First Lady, Michelle Obama has already received high approval ratings with her Jackie O style, the Narciso Rodriguez Spring 09 runway design left the public debating. My view was immediately positive for the graphic embellishment with an hour glass silhouette. The bold lines and color expressed Obamas’ progressive taste instead of the political neutral blandness found in Washington.

His new album “Other People’s Love Songs” is an original project using love stories from friends and commissions as lyrics. Feeling a little like a voyeur, I enjoyed the narrative listening to the couple’s detailed stories and began to compare them to my own history with Chris. For fun, the album downloaded with the couple’s names attached to each song. Dargel cleverly stayed away for the usual “love” generalities but instead crooned about the couple’s abstract attraction that really describe love. Even a few domestic conflicts, create some tension from to track to track. With very operatic lush melodies keeps me smiling and wondering what I would write for my love song. The album is available on iTunes and New Amsterdam Records. Visit Corey Dargel for future shows.

The baker’s dozen were instead cleverly hand-painted Peter Fox shoes by designer Tracey Asai. The bakery is currently closed for renovations but donated the window for the shoe display supporting “Shoes That Inspire” Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund. Tracey Asai chose a variety of confectionery themes and you can win a pair in the upcoming raffle. Tickets are $10 for each design available for purchase at http://www.traceyasaidesigns.com/silk_shoe_contest.html.
